Legal Concerns
Taking care of personal legal affairs in a timely manner is extremely important upon returning home from deployment.

Powers of Attorney (POA)

All POAs should have expiration dates.  However, any POAs that do not have an expiration date or have a date that has not yet arrived should be revoked.  Notify, in writing, any businesses or companies of the revocation.

Revocation of a Power of Attorney is most effectively accomplished by obtaining the original and destroying it.  You should not leave a Power of Attorney in effect if it is no longer needed.  If you are unable to obtain the original Power of Attorney, you may want to provide your creditors, bank, or business institutions with a Power of Attorney Revocation.

Wills

For persons with a Will, the document should be reviewed for continued validity.  Soldiers should review if beneficiaries are still persons of concern.

  • Review for continued validity
  • JAG Office will prepare one for Soldiers at no charge.

  • Insurance

Insurance should be evaluated for all coverage: residential, auto, and life. Car insurance may need to be reinstated or increased if coverage was changed during active military duty. Driver’s license and car tag(s) may need to be renewed.
